Ultrasound fees
Ultrasound scans are available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves, which bounce off internal organs and tissues, creating echoes which are then converted into images. It is a safe way to see what’s happening inside your body and is done in real time, so it can show movement, blood flow and structure. A sonographer is a medical professional who performs the scan, using gel and a handheld tool called a transducer. The echoes are picked up by the transducer and converted into images that are viewed on a screen. A radiologist is a doctor who specialises in reporting the scan findings. Once the radiologist reads your scan, the report will go back to your referrer.
An ultrasound scan usually takes about half an hour, depending on what part of your body is being scanned. You may be asked to change into a gown prior to your scan or uncover the area that needs to be scanned.
Currently, Waiheke Health Trust provides obstetric, general, DVT musculoskeletal and some types of paediatric scans. We do not offer breast or carotid scans.
Preparation instructions:
Not all scans require preparation. However, for some you may be required to have a full bladder or not eat prior to your scan.
For kidney/bladder/renal scans, you are required to have a full bladder. This helps us to get the best view possible. Empty your bladder one and a half hours prior to your appointment, then drink one litre (4-5 glasses) of water over the next thirty minutes. This should be completed one hour prior to your appointment time. Please do not go to the toilet. (Please let us know if you have any issues holding a full bladder when you make your appointment).
For scans of your abdomen, it is important you do not eat or drink anything for six hours beforehand. This helps give a clearer picture of your organs. If needed, you can take medication with a small amount of water prior to your scan.
If you are a diabetic patient who is having a scan that requires fasting, please let our receptionist know and we will book you into an early morning appointment.

If you have been referred for a non-ACC scan and are not able to afford the cost, you may be eligible for an Access to Diagnostics (ProExtra) voucher from your GP. Please speak to your medical practice about this.
We can accept referrals for ages 5 and above with low clinical indications including pelvis, abdomen (not gastro focused), renal, musculoskeletal, and lumps and bumps. We cannot do specialist indicated scans. The DHB need to approve the referrals before we can accept them and schedule the appointments, so bookings and scans won’t happen immediately. Reports are issued by the very busy team at Starship, so you should expect a wait of at least a couple of days for reports.
X-ray fees
Waiheke Health Trust has a modern radiology suite, updated and replaced in 2023. You don’t need to travel to the city to get most x-rays.
Our on-island clinic operates from the Waiheke Health Trust building:
5 Belgium St, Ostend - Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm.
We welcome everyone on the island to use our services and you will need a referral from your doctor, chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist to have an x-ray.
Asha Boswell is our skilled and experienced Waiheke Health Trust Radiographer.
Pricing notes:
The cost of this service varies and with ACC claims you will be charged at a subsidised rate.
Multiple x-rays (non ACC): If more than one area is x-rayed, full price is charged for the more expensive procedure and 50% for each additional.

Rates and conditions for private Home Support
Effective 1 January 2026
Charge Rates
All Support Worker rates are calculated per hour and are exclusive of GST.
Advanced Support rates are applicable if you request a Support Worker Qualified to NZQA Level 4 or your Support Tasks are advanced and require a Level 4 worker to safely complete these tasks. This will be discussed with you as part of the Service Delivery Set Up.
Service Delivery Plan
Our Waiheke Health Trust staff need a detailed plan in which to carry out duties for you or your loved ones. A Home Support Manager will come to the home and do a detailed assessment in collaboration with the client and whānau. This will be updated annually if your cares extend past 12 months.
Cancellation and Change Deadlines
Assignments for the coming week can be cancelled by the service user by giving notice by 4pm on the Wednesday of the week prior. If a shift is not cancelled by 4pm on Wednesday of the week prior, then we will invoice for the length of that shift.
Temporary or permanent changes to the service user’s schedule for the coming week must be received by 4pm on the Wednesday of the week prior for them to be incorporated into the roster.
Training
All staff complete a minimum of National Certificate in Health, Disability and Age Support – Level 2 Foundation Skills and are offered support to complete Levels 3 and 4. All staff are expected to complete a Patient Manual Handling and medication prompting competency annually.
Travel Costs
Support Workers use their own cars and petrol and under law they must be reimbursed for this. Waiheke Health Trust has added in the applicable rates chargeable for all Support Workers. These rates are subject to change in line with governmental guidance.
Exceptional Travel is when you are offered and accept a career that lives at least 30km return from your home. This will be only by agreement.
Invoicing
The Client will pay Waiheke Health Trust a fee for service at the rates specified above, plus GST where applicable. This includes relevant public holiday penalty rates. Waiheke Health Trust will invoice the Client for the Services and any expenses fortnightly. The Client will pay any invoices by direct credit into Waiheke Health Trust’s nominated bank account within 7 days of receipt of correct invoice.
