Monthly Men’s Health Clinic Launches on Waiheke

Waiheke men and their whānau packed out two community health evenings in 2024 and 2025, bringing honest conversations and plenty of laughter. The key takeaway? Many local blokes admit to putting their well-being on the back burner. In response, Ostend Medical Centre has partnered with Auckland Men’s Clinic to launch a dedicated monthly men’s health clinic on the island.

Featured speaker Dr Alistair Somerville now brings his specialized practice directly to Waiheke. ‘Blokes are often hopeless at getting their warrant of fitness,’ says Dr Somerville. ‘My purpose is to help men live the longest, healthiest life they can.’

Dr Somerville highlights three key proactive steps every man should consider:

  • Erectile Health: ED can be an early indicator of cardiovascular health issues. Treating ED with PDE5 inhibitors (like sildenafil or tadalafil) has been associated with a significantly lower risk of heart attack or stroke.

  • Prostate Screening: Organised PSA testing and follow-up reduce prostate cancer mortality by roughly 20%. Discuss screening with your GP from age 50—or 40 if you have a family history.

  • Strength Training: Just 30 to 60 minutes of strength work per week (across two sessions) is linked to a 15% reduction in premature death.  No gym membership needed!

The clinic offers confidential 30-minute appointments for Well Man Checks, sexual health care, ED treatment, and post-prostate surgery support. You do not need to be enrolled at Ostend Medical Centre to book; the service complements your existing GP care.

One recent patient shared: ‘Last month, pretty much on impulse, I booked an appointment at the Men's Clinic at Ostend Medical Centre.  I was very impressed by Alistair, who is approachable, very experienced and great at providing treatment options.  We covered off all the things I needed, and I came away feeling more reassured about my health position and clear on what I need to do.’
