Gentle, practical tips from our Well Child nurses
Kirsten and Elaine here, your Well Child Tamariki Ora nurses from the Waiheke Health Trust. This month, we are sharing some gentle, practical tips to help you and your toddler get ready for the exciting milestone of toilet training.
First, choose the right time to start. It is best to begin when family life is settled. Avoid times of big change, like moving house or welcoming a new baby, and make sure all caregivers are on the same page.
You can build awareness early. From around one year old, start making the potty feel like a normal part of life. By 18 months, if your toddler can follow simple instructions and sit comfortably, you can introduce short nappy-free times. Children learn by copying and reading, so let them watch family members use the bathroom, and read fun potty-themed picture books together.
To encourage independence, try changing nappies while your child stands up. Let them practice pulling their clothes up and down and always wash hands together. When discussing the bathroom, use positive words. Avoid calling poo "yucky" or "smelly," as this can make toddlers hesitant. Instead, make the bathroom familiar by changing nappies there, tipping poo into the toilet, and letting them wave goodbye as it flushes.
When you are ready, offer the potty at good times, such as right after waking up or shortly after meals. Keep in mind that both boys and girls should learn sitting down, as this is the most natural position for everything to happen together.
