Welcome to the Waiheke Health Trust

Healthcare, by locals, for locals - driven by community, not by profit. We have been supporting the Waiheke community, with specialist health expertise, since 1991, guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

From the first heartbeat to the final breath – we are here for you and your whānau!

Well Child Tamariki Ora Nurse

As a Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse, I love building relationships with families and watching their children grow. Supporting and empowering parents with knowledge and tools to nurture their children's development is incredibly rewarding. Journeying with families from their baby's six-week check until age five, and often beyond as whānau expand is special. With over 20 years as a pediatrics nurse, I listen to parents' needs, relieve anxieties, and provide practical support. Monitoring holistic development while connecting families to specialist services creates meaningful impact. Blending clinical expertise with cultural engagement to improve children's lives on Waiheke is a privilege.

Specialist Community Nurse

I've been a district nurse for 25+ years and still love it! The connection with clients and their families is a highlight, as is collaborating toward shared goals, whether wound healing, palliative care, or diabetic management education. Working alongside my district nurse colleagues and our multidisciplinary team to find solutions, so clients can stay safely at home, is incredibly satisfying. While we handle complex nursing care requiring specialised skills, what's most rewarding is empowering clients to self-manage their care with our guidance and support, enabling them to maintain independence and successfully stay in their homes.

Specialist Community Nurse

I've spent most of my nursing career in hospital settings across a range of specialist roles. Having worked for many years in pain and palliative care, I've developed strong communication and advocacy skills in these areas. I deeply value supporting clients and whānau through this important stage of their life journey. I enjoy working in partnership with my clients, my remarkable colleagues, and the wider allied health team, to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care. Working with clients and whānau, within the Waiheke community, is a privilege and professionally so rewarding that I wish I’d moved into primary health much earlier!

Specialist Community Nurse

I'm passionate about caring for clients in their own homes, where you see the true picture of someone's life - how they're coping, what support they have, and what they need to heal and thrive. Being welcomed into someone's home to care for both the patient and their whānau is a genuine privilege. My specialty is palliative care: supporting and educating families to care for loved ones through life-limiting illness. There's deep satisfaction in helping someone remain in familiar surroundings during vulnerable times. I work with an exceptional, professional team who share this passion for compassionate, home-based care.

I love district nursing's diversity because it demands knowledge, kindness, intuition, and flexibility. After completing further wound care studies, we're seeing fantastic results for patients. I enjoy collaborating closely with colleagues to ensure patients receive consistent, clearly explained care. It is humbling to see people's appreciation of us during such vulnerable times. Contributing to their wellbeing is such a privilege. Working alongside the wider WHT team, we want our visits to add real value, mobilising other health professionals when needed, to deliver the comprehensive, quality care our community deserves.

I work alongside an incredible team encompassing administrators, nurses, doctors, and multidisciplinary professionals, all are dedicated to caring for our patients. Finding innovative solutions to complex problems is my passion, something impossible without the talented people around me. I specialise in older people's health, where complexity is the norm: multiple long-term conditions, like diabetes, require balancing physical, emotional, social, spiritual, cultural, and financial needs within the context of whānau and community support and all on an island! It's challenging work, but that's exactly what drives me. Meeting these intricate healthcare needs with creativity and compassion is deeply rewarding. Challenge accepted!

Extended Care Paramedic

I love practicing interdisciplinary medicine with my colleagues. Conversing with fellow practitioners ensures treating our patients with a better approach. Our GPs, Nurse Practitioner and nurses’ knowledge is vast and they are extremely generous with sharing this. I'm particularly skilled in triaging and treating life-threatening conditions: anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, heart attacks, shortness of breath, and severe bleeding. These skills complement those of my fellow healthcare practitioners in offering the best service to our patients.

Throughout my career, I've worked across numerous specialties, but wound care has become a true passion. There's something deeply satisfying about watching the healing progress unfold. As a practice nurse, I draw on all the skills I've gained over the years to deliver comprehensive, personalised care. I believe laughter and humour are powerful tools in healthcare, so I always try to bring a smile to my patients' faces while providing the expert attention they need and deserve.

Working as a GP on Waiheke means being part of the fabulous Waiheke Health Trust team, connecting deeply with our wonderful island community and experiencing incredible variety in my work. I'm passionate about holistic care and building meaningful relationships with patients and their whānau, taking time to understand their whole story. I love all aspects of general practice but have specialist qualifications in wāhine/women's health and lifestyle medicine. Being able to support women through all life stages and help patients make sustainable lifestyle changes that improve their wellbeing brings me immense satisfaction.

I love the variety of patients and health conditions I see every day. Complex health conditions and procedures are where I really thrive. As a GP, I enjoy the diagnostic challenge and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference across all areas of general practice. I have particular expertise in skin lesion assessment and removal, including moles, which allows me to provide comprehensive dermatological care right here on Waiheke. My surgical skills enable me to perform minor procedures in-house, saving patients the inconvenience of traveling off-island. Building long-term relationships with patients while offering this breadth of care is incredibly rewarding.

I moved from the UK to New Zealand to be near my sister, Dr Zoe Douglass, and am delighted to be able to work alongside her. I love being a GP and I'm passionate about proactive, lifestyle medicine and women's health. I'm a Wānaka resident and enthusiastic outdoor adventurer, so I love my visits to Waiheke as they not only give me the opportunity to see my telehealth patients in person, but also to enjoy the island lifestyle with my sister.

Healthcare in a rural community, like Waiheke, is super special. I love the teamwork between our staff and the people we are caring for. I'm a 'Gil of all trades' having worked in many acute areas across multiple hospitals. My special loves are emergency, rehab, and preventative care. My guiding approach to healthcare is ensuring autonomy and dignity for our patients.

Health Care Assistant

I've been working for Waiheke Health Trust for almost a decade, and it's been truly beautiful having the opportunity to support our community and health professionals. I started my career here as a home support worker, and I'm proud to have grown into my current role as a healthcare assistant. This journey has allowed me to build on skills I'm passionate about: attentive listening, being consciously present with those I care for, and maintaining strong attention to detail. Every day brings opportunities to make a real difference in people's lives, and I value the trust our community places in me and our dedicated team.

I’ve always wanted to work in the community I grew up in so that I can give back to our special little community, so it is a joy and a privilege building connections with island whānau. Watching Waiheke tamariki grow and develop, and being able to provide guidance, reassurance and support during such an important stage of life is especially wonderful. I try to communicate in a supportive and non-judgmental way to create a safe environment where parents feel heard and supported and find ways to wrap care around whānau within our community every day.

I love that my job allows me to make a difference in a close-knit community. Working in a small practice on an island enables me to build meaningful relationships with patients and their families, as I'm truly caring for people across all stages of their lives. The environment is also a huge part of why I love my job. Waiheke offers a slower pace of life, beautiful surroundings, and a strong sense of community. I have an interest in care for patients with Diabetes and respiratory conditions like Asthma and COPD and hope that my work with these patients allows them to better enjoy their lives on our beautiful island. Working in rural healthcare has also given me the opportunity to enhance my skills in acute care, which I am enjoying.

I deeply value the privilege people afford me by sharing the most vulnerable and emotionally painful aspects of their lives. Promoting wellbeing without discrimination is central to my social work practice. Supporting people through life's challenges is profoundly fulfilling, I'm honoured they let me in. Actively listening is crucial because when people feel heard, they feel validated. I don't see deficits that define them, I'm curious about their strengths, skills, and capacities. We work together to identify these assets to overcome present challenges. It's not about ignoring problems but recognising and building upon their inherent strengths.

There's no greater joy than holding a hemiplegic hand, walking alongside gradual loss of movement, sharing the frustration of painstaking rehabilitation, the grief of disease and disability, the strength of persistence, and celebrating wins with whānau and friends. I'm part of a Waiheke Health Trust team where disability, disease, and death can be beautiful - things society often hides or turns from. Being welcomed into this space is such a taonga. I'm passionate about making our world accessible and ensuring elders thrive through housing modifications, assistive equipment, and rehabilitation. My PhD critiqued housing policy, and I advocate for change via our Local Board, community connections, and as a board member of the Waiheke Community Housing Trust.

Capturing quality images and providing the diagnostic information needed brings me real satisfaction. I specialise in general, musculoskeletal, and obstetric ultrasounds. The people of Waiheke have been so welcoming, and I still hear daily how thankful they are for ultrasound services on the island. Occupational Therapist

I love supporting people to stay independent and safe in their own homes for as long as possible. Working in the community means seeing people in their environment and tailoring solutions that fit their lives, not just their diagnoses. Building relationships, listening to stories, and helping maintain dignity, confidence, and quality of life is rewarding. No two workdays are the same. I specialise in community-based occupational therapy with older adults, focusing on practical interventions that make everyday life easier and safer. I enjoy problem-solving collaboratively with clients, whānau, and health professionals to find functional, culturally respectful solutions.

I particularly value providing X-ray services locally on the motu, with our modern X-ray machine it saves patients travelling into the city. With years of experience in international hospital settings, I understand the importance of image quality, accuracy, and efficiency. My focus is consistently delivering clear, reliable imaging that enables off-site radiologists to make accurate diagnoses, ensuring our patients receive appropriate, timely care, all while our patients remain in our lovely community. I enjoy meeting diverse people and knowing my X-rays significantly impact their care pathway and the speed of their recovery.

I love my role as a health coach as it gives people the space, information and encouragement to change their lives for the better. Although I focus predominantly on small practical tweaks to their lifestyle, often the results go beyond physical outcomes - resulting in greater feelings of confidence, control and positivity. I genuinely like people and am interested in their lives and the challenges that they face. I am non-judgmental and understand that each person is an individual and needs an individual approach. Although some need education or accountability, most people just need a listening ear and time to work out how to implement positive changes.

I like to think that my specialty is helping people smile and feel just that little bit better, which I believe is such a tonic for people’s wellbeing. What I love most about my work at Waiheke Health Trust is being able to transform small moments of vulnerability into genuine smiles. Simple acts of kindness, though they may seem insignificant, can completely shift someone’s day and emotional state. I also value the sense of community, where we support one another and ensure no one is left without a helping hand. I believe my strength lies in my ability to truly listen and create a safe, supportive space for others. I help people feel heard, understood, and comfortable enough to express their emotions. I worked as an auditor in my home country, but have been a Community Support Worker since arriving in New Zealand. While this job is quite different, it is the most rewarding work that I have ever done. In fact, it doesn't feel like a job, it feels like just visiting a family or a friend! It is uplifting to know that you're imparting something to society, and seeing the clients become socially active in the the community and knowing that you've enriched their lives, delights me.

Serving on the board is a privilege, especially supporting our dedicated staff who work so hard to enhance our community's wellbeing. Waiheke is special, and I'm honoured to contribute to this essential work. As a retired GP and medical administrator, I understand the challenges facing health professionals, and how changes in our practice can confuse those seeking services. With healthcare economics becoming increasingly complex, we need diverse skills working together to secure Waiheke's health services for years ahead. My experience helps bridge these worlds, helping to ensure our community receives the care it deserves.
