Ultrasound fees

Ultrasound scans are available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves, which bounce off internal organs and tissues, creating echoes which are then converted into images. It is a safe way to see what’s happening inside your body and is done in real time, so it can show movement, blood flow and structure. A sonographer is a medical professional who performs the scan, using gel and a handheld tool called a transducer. The echoes are picked up by the transducer and converted into images that are viewed on a screen. A radiologist is a doctor who specialises in reporting the scan findings. Once the radiologist reads your scan, the report will go back to your referrer.

An ultrasound scan usually takes about half an hour, depending on what part of your body is being scanned.  You may be asked to change into a gown prior to your scan or uncover the area that needs to be scanned.

Currently, Waiheke Health Trust provides obstetric, general, DVT musculoskeletal and some types of paediatric scans.  We do not offer breast or carotid scans.

Preparation instructions:
Not all scans require preparation. However, for some you may be
required to have a full bladder, or not eat prior to your scan.

For early pregnancy, pelvic and kidney/renal scans, you are required to have a full bladder. This helps us to get the best view possible. Empty your bladder one and a half hours prior to your appointment, then drink one litre (4-5 glasses) of water over the next thirty minutes. This should be completed one hour prior to your appointment time. Please do not go to the toilet. (Please let us know if you have any issues holding a full bladder when you make your appointment).

For scans of your abdomen, it is important you do not eat or drink anything for six hours beforehand. This helps give a clearer picture of your organs. If needed, you can take medication with a small amount of water prior to your scan.

If you are a diabetic patient who is having a scan that requires fasting, please let our receptionist know and we will book you into an earlier appointment time.

It was a completely different experience for me to have health professionals who cared so much but who weren’t my mum, I’m me of course but I am a different person now, because of the care and advice I was given, Erica is so professional. I just wish I’d know about this when I was younger.
